Here is some unforgettable experiences that we will share :
In the morning of 7th, September 2017, we got order for force abstraction from Yigi District, at KM 100th pole point, to Mugi District, at KM 114th pole point. It is the starting point of Mugi - Mapenduma Road development project. We were lead by Maj Andi Setiawan, the Commander of 10th Battle Engineering Detachement.
Though we have no enough information, we haven't lost our spirit to reach the location. Honestly, we had have a little hesitation when moving into the area, considering this district has not been called on by Indonesian Army for almost 20 years. As we know, years ago, Mapenduma was being a basic operation for Organisasi Papua Merdeka (OPM), a local separatist group. So, we assumed that Mugi people stil had traumatic memory as the effect of Indonesian Special Force military operation when releasing some OPM's hostages in Mapenduma in 1996.
Moreover, we found that many local people can not speak Bahasa Indonesia. Smiles and greetings were being our "language" during our journey towards Mugi District. Finally, after beaten by heavy rain and haze density, we had arrived in Mugi at the afternoon securely.
At that moment, with minimum amount of logistics, the task force should survive and waiting for supply which could only dropped by chopper. The land transportation line were not provided, moreover landslide had broken some bridges along the route.
Next days, we started the mission with territorial approaches. First, we held a "Bakar Batu" ceremony not only as a symbol of our gratefull for safety arrival in Mugi District, but also as a sign of the begining our mission.
"Bakar Batu" is an important tradition in Papua's culture. It is a cooking ritual which attended by all villages residents. The purpose of this ritual is to pray for the succed of the mission. Besides, it has been the way for the Task Force members to communicate with Mugi local residents and understanding their characters. Surprisingly, all our worries about the people has gone with the local hospitality. They were happy to attend the "Bakar Batu" ceremony. Even some of them has had left their daily activities in order to join the ceremony.
Further, we continued our soft approach by giving sport tools such as soccer and volley balls which accepted by the chief of district directly. We hope village residents could enjoy sport games among them after finish daily agricultural works in their field. We were very enjoyed our times everytime we saw their original laugh when playing sports together.
Although we had built a trusted relationship with the local people, we kept our commitment to present security for the villages, and indeed, we always put self safety as our top priority in any activities.
During the approach, the Task Force has always informed the society about the purpose of the road development. By seen our seriousness, the district chief had represented his people, told us that they gave fully approval and support our mission.
"We've had been waiting for years to see transportation modes passing through our village, so it would made the prices of our basic needs get lower and easier to get. Furthermore, we really want to have experience on riding transportation vehicles to Wamena," said the chief.
Now, the Wamena - Mamugu Road Developing and Upgrading Task Force is still working hard to finish the mission. We really want to help the Mapenduma people by breaking the nature isolation which has been made them live in limitedness. We are willing to leave our families in order to accomplish this assigment. We believe this job ia not only the way to help people but also as part of our worship to our supreme God.
Well, that's a little story about our first journey toward Mugi. We realize that in the future we would have to face more obstacles, but we believe that he are doing a precious job. We will keep our spirit high and do the best while God do the rest.
